Yep, before we started homeschooling 15 years ago, I can remember being like that. Now, I'm proud to say I'm a homeschooling dad and proud of it.

Great article! It reminded me of Mark Gungor's delightful "Men's Brain - Women's Brain" (10 minutes)

Thanks Arun, brilliant and insightful as usual. Your male perspective has helped me enormously in constructing my notes for the Perth 2008 Home Education Seminar next weekend. Robin would have said all of the above but he hasn't got the way with words that you have! Thank you very much from both of us.

cheers

A link to this article was posted on the Scottish home education yahoo goup so I immediately checked it out - my husband is one of the very reluctant ones - and all I can say is a very simple, heartfelt THANK you. We are new to homeschooling and while I am nervous my husband is probably terrified; I can see that now. We live in Ireland where the home schooling community is either tiny or very much still 'underground'. The timing of finding your insights could not be better as we are all off on holiday to Spain next week..so, fingers crossed.

That is the best article for dads (and moms) that I've read. Your insight is spot on and you are so organized as you cover all of the points - no rambling off on tangents. It really is like you interviewed my husband and saw all of his concerns! Thanks for such helpful advice.

I'm a new member to the Yahoo, "Alway's Learning" board. I had just posted my first time, see, "New Member-Life Learning & LOVING IT!". I read a few posts and then came upon your link to this article. THANK YOU! Thank you for your honesty, your bravery, your "getting inside the male brain", in a way only an Unschooling Dad could do! My DH is not "with" me, regarding my choice for USing. And really, it was My choice. (The reasons, are in my post). While I was reading some posts on the board, my DD,(7) and I came upon the realization that she didn't understand how to count to 100 by 2's. She really wanted to. So I started writing out a couple of examples of how she could do so, so that SHE could "understand" doing so, for herself. Well, she got it, in two minutes. She just counted to 100, in 3's,4's and 5's, in about a half hour. She was happy and proud of herself, because she did it, in a way that SHE understood it. Not by a teacher showing her how she should "memorize" it. How long do you think it would have taken her to "learn" that in PS, (we all know MEMORIZING would be what would have applied)? And she understood that as well. I cried for that. Happy tears for her, for me, and sad ones, that even though she will show her Daddy what she "learned" today, that HE, won't "get it". But, I'll keep reading your article, so that, hopefully, with your insight and suggestions, I can somehow, for lack of a better word "help" him, to "get it".

Blessings, Chasey

This is great. And true.

You're giving us a lot of insider info, which some men might resent -- fortunately as you pointed out, we can trust our husbands *not* to read this entire article. Hehehe.
