M & I recently made a 2 hour drive both ways to & from Brisbane to see “the Fairies” live. M got dressed as a fairy especially.
Had a fantastic chat on the way back to Byron Bay. Started with M (who is 5yrs) asking why we could drive past the other cars and me explaining […]

When we first started this site one of the first articles i posted was “An Unschooling Journey – from Control to Connection”, which described our own journey into unschooling. It was written for an excellent magazine based in Australia called Kindred Magazine (formerly Byrons Child).
They have indicated that they might use it for the June […]

Thanks to Alan Thomson for allowing permission to reprint his article “What Home Educators can teach the world about Natural Learning” which you can read here…
Alan is an academic and his article describes an interesting journey into unfamiliar realms of education and “learning” over “teaching” for any academic to come to terms with…

While holidaying with my family we have been getting a lot of concerned questions about our homeschooling choices. Some of the most interesting questions coming from our daughters’ cousins who are 11 & 14 yrs respectively but others too. Too summarise the arguments/ concerns:

Attending a friends wedding and taking the opportunity to catch up with friends & family in Melbourne. Has been both fantastic fun and really difficult at times.
Mental note to self – non coercive parenting is very challenging when in five different houses in seven days. Of course we created the situation but it has been […]

Homeschoolers make up over 1.1 million people in the USA. Obviously this is a very mixed bag, I remember reading one estimate of unschoolers within that being between 20 to 40% but for the life of me I cannot remember where I read that and how they came to that figure!
What ever the case […]

Sick of the jargon? Here are some quick definitions of unschooling, radical unschooling, aware parenting, NVC, PET and more…
I wont vouch for their accuracy but they are my spin on these terms and a decent starting point.

We have recently moved near Byron Bay, NSW, Australia. Perhaps a region where alternative minds & lifestyles are more common than anywhere else in Australia yet apparently with few homeschoolers. Maybe due to the countless alternative/ community schools? If you have found this post and are homeschooling or interested in it and in northern NSW […]

This one is definitely worth a read. Long but gives a good sense of radical unschooling. It airs the usual criticisms – that it wont work for children who are “not questioners”… which misses the point that if children are given space to follow their interest and develop self motivation that they will. I think […]

It is a common question: “so you homeschool…aren’t you worried about socialisation?”
I like unschooling Mum Rue Kream’s response, “Yes, but not for my own children.”
This reversal is also creatively captured in the excellent article Conversations From the Future, which is definitely worth a read if you have not seen it already.
Today we were at […]
