Before we become Worm Food

grave.jpgYears ago when i had a day job and only one child, I used to catch a melbourne tram up lygon street to work. The sardine feel was horrible, as was saying good bye to my lover and our new baby for the best part of the day.

The tram would trundle past a huge cemetery every morning. It might sound morbid – but i would recommend that everyone start their day that way!

It was hard not to stay in touch with life, with the present, while looking at all of those grave stones. Every morning it was a living (dead?) reminder to appreciate life. We have since established our organic home business, so the work commute is a thing of the past… but i still try to remember my old morning trips to spur me into bouts of appreciation. Ooh… here comes one now.

For my lover & partner, I love:

  • that she sings like Janis Joplin into bananas
  • that I can tell her mood by looking at her chin
  • that she can dance like no one is watching
  • that she smiles from ear to ear after she swims in the ocean

For my daughter (5 yrs old), I love:

  • the way she sometimes sings… no shouts the Beatles “Yellow Submarine” during long car trips
  • that if she wakes up and calls us at 2am she apologises for “falling awake”
  • the way she makes herself “kids coffee” (oat milk in a cup, placed in fridge for 2 minutes, then drank with a tea spoon…)
  • the way she constantly lobbies that we all wear colourful clothes

For my son (1 yr old), I love:

  • the way he gets so much joy from playing with an unplugged vacuum cleaner for up to an hour at a time
  • the way he says hello to strangers then hides in my chest when they say hello back
  • the way he tries to stop himself from falling asleep by blowing rasberries
  • the way he feeds me when I feed him

So who are you appreciating today?

    Hey Arun,

You’ve just been tagged for the 8 things meme

See, if I’d not crashed out you website I could have tagged you first. Damn you Danielle! Damn you and the limited world of shared unschooling blogs! ::BEG::

It should have been your website, not you website, and I wanted to add that I like this 5 things I love about somebody dealie (I don’t like the idea of memes, so I try and avoid the word). Maybe I’ll play that too.

I am appreciating all of the great blogs I am finding that are truly inspiring.

I am appreciating all the work my husband is doing around the outside of the house–the yards look awsome.

I am appreciating the fact that my 7 yr old brushed his teeth this morning with no prompting.

I am appreciating a piping hot cup of coffee with cream.

And I am appreciating the dance between the cat and the dog–both still young.

I loved your appreciation post, so I stole the concept and a few of your words. “Bouts of appreciation” — love it!

Thanks for the fun and beautiful reading, and thanks to Schuyler for turning me onto your site!
