Religion, God and Molly

Yesterday driving to brisbane and our 5 yr old daughter asked again about God. We are keen not to “push” our beliefs or lack of beliefs on her and try to reflect a range of opinions as objectively as possible.

We talked about how different people believed in different things. Anne talked about her mum who is Christian and goes to Church. I discussed my mum who is Sikh and goes to a Gurdwara. Both believed in God but and some different ideas about aspects of how things worked… amazing how hard religion vs god is to explain!

She kept asking and i got excited hitting a pet topic. Im an athiest who has a keen interest in religion and I ended up discussing many polythestic religions like Ancient Greek and Egypt Gods. I had not even got to my favourites – Ganesh, Shiva and Hindu Gods when i noticed that our daughter had had enough… she sat silently mulling over it all.

“You don’t believe in God do you?” She asked to confirm. Then on my affirmation she thought a little more and said. “I believe in God.”

I thought it would end there but no…

She went on to tell us about the God she believed in… her name is Molly. Her top half was a tree with purple spots and gold in between and her bottom half are claws. She has a hammer which she would use to crash things down with, which was why sometimes we could here banging noises (but sometimes it was just people).

There was a lot more… including another God who was her friend. Could not believe the detail, we had to write it all down.

At the end she said. “Im not sure about them but I believe in them.”

So much faith in one so young :)

Im tempted to pray to Molly tonight… just in case!

I really enjoyed reading about her version of God!:)
I lean to the agnostic side and my wee man (6y.o.) informed me that he believed in God IF “god could make the whole earth” (after hearing that some people believe that).

    So cute.
