New Article – ”Parenting is Making My Brain Hurt”…

I have added a new article entitled “Parenting is Making My Brain Hurt”. This is a rewrite of an older entry which reflected my shift from providing answers and “covering up” problems towards other parenting approaches.

The article covers some major influences in this shift from Thomas Gorden (PET), Solter (Aware Parenting), Naomi Aldolt and Marshal Rosenburg’s NVC.

This was originally a blog entry entitled “Solutions are No Solutions”… but since that time I have been honoured to be invited to submit something to Connections ezine of unschooling & mindful parenting. I have just finished rewriting the article and cleaning it up so it can begin to meet the standards of that wonderful ezine.

Read the updated article here, “Parenting is Making My Brain Hurt”.

here is a little quote from the article:

when a “melt down” is happening before my eyes, I feel like telling my daughter, “wait… just let me think for an hour, check these books, make a phone call, run some scenario’s by a few egroups, then I’ll get back to you with a response that will validate your feelings, identify your needs, support you in generating win win strategies, and connect us as two empowered yet autonomous human beings!” Back to the real world, and I find myself blurting out something like, “so… you are feeling angry?”

When I am compassionate with myself, I can acknowledge that even that response is a step up from my old approach where it might have been shouting, “hey, that cloud looks like a duck!” while pointing wildly to the sky.

    Arun,

I just read your piece in Connections. It really touched on some of the things that I have difficulty with. I may be a woman, but I’m no earth momma, I’ll analyse the heck out of just about everything that comes into my line of vision.

I just wanted to say thanks, and I enjoyed the essay.
