Today our daughter caught her first wave
It was on a body board at Brunswick Head beach. Just a few months ago she was scared of water. A few weeks ago she would not go to any water with waves. Yet today we could not get her out.
At the same time Anne pointed out two fathers who were dragging their children into the ocean against their will and with much screaming. They apparently had the attitude that their children needed to “face their fears” and get familiar with the water.
In our family Anne is passionate about the ocean. Her face lights up at the thought of it and she dives in at any opportunity. We avoided pressuring our daughter, instead Anne modelled via her passion for the water.
This passion has been contagious and slowly but surely our daughter has wanted to share the experience. Anne took her at her own time with our daughter feeling in control of the situation always… and today she caught a wave!
It helps that no comparisons are being made in a school context so she can really just go at her own pace and do it when it feels right for her.
Watching our daughter and her mum today… has actually inspired me to shed my anti water stance, so next time Im going to get my daughter to help me catch my first wave too
